American Underslung

American Underslung were based in the Triad area of North Carolina during the 1980s. Band members:

  • Stephen Poole (guitar, vocals). Stephen's other bands include The Apostles in the early 80s and Rid of Dailys after American Underslung. He is the only other person I knew at the time who had a red Fender Mustang just like mine.
  • Gary Carter (vocals, keyboards). Gary is also known as the charismatic singer of Stigmata in the 80s, a band that included Stephen Poole's twin brother Mike.
  • Julia Poole (bass). Julia went on to form Rid of Dailys with Stephen. Deaconlight.com fans know her as the photographer who took the photos of U2's inaugural show of the 1983 War Tour and the Violent Femmes shots at Friday's in Greensboro. Look for more band photos by Julia soon on Deaconlight.com.
  • Tommy Cowett (drums). One of the most well-known North Carolina bands of the 80s was the Othermothers, which featured several of the Cowett brothers. Tommy played drums for American Underslung after the breakup of the Othermothers. (Incidently, Tommy's brother Al Cowett, the Othermothers' singer/bassist, was Best Man at my courthouse wedding and Julia Poole was my Matron of Honor.)

This video is from Hot Tamales in Greensboro on Tate Street (near where Friday's used to be). Recorded on October 2, 1988, when Hot Tamales closed. I remember being there but I don't think you can see me in the audience. You should be looking at the band anyway. Check out Stephen's lead guitar solos!
